Press Release Archive, 2000
5/4/2000 P R E S S R E L E A S E From: Capital PC User Group, Inc. 11141 Georgia Avenue, Suite 217, Wheaton, MD 20902 http://www.cpcug.org At 8:45 am ET on 5/4/2000, Millkern Communications (Millkern) and the Capital PC User Group (CPCUG) received notification that a potentially harmful computer virus referred to as the "I Love You" virus was being received by computers worldwide, and creating significant problems. By 11:00 am Millkern had received two confirmed reports from its own customers and began to develop a reaction plan to protect its customers against this threat. All users were notified via e-mail of the potential threat and notified not to open any attachments where "ILOVEYOU" was the subject of the message. At 1:00 pm service to customers was modified such that e-mail containing the virus, sent to a user of the cpcug.org Internet service, was returned to the sender, notifying the sender that he or she had potentially contracted the virus. The e-mail was not delivered to the user, who remained protected from the threat. This modification required no customer action. Millkern and CPCUG are proud to announce that their plan to protect users appears to have had a significant impact, with few reports of damage caused by the "I Love You" threat. In addition, Millkern and CPCUG's users suffered no interruption in delivery of e-mail or other Internet service during this period, other than protection against the virus. Millkern Communications is an Internet service provider offering commercial and residential Internet access, DSL, and Web hosting services across the United States. It has been in business since November 1993. The Capital PC User Group, established in 1982, is a 3000+ member computer user group based in Wheaton, Maryland. CPCUG is a nonprofit charitable organization dedicated to computer education. For additional information contact: Scott Mohnkern Gabe Goldberg
