Capital PC User Group (CPCUG) Internet Special Interest Group (SIG) October Meeting
Topic: New Internet Applications: Distinguishing Winners from Toys and Losers
Speaker: Peter Bostrom, Chief Technical Officer, Morino Institute
Date: Thursday, October 14, 7 PM
Location: Washington Gas Light Corporation, Springfield, Virginia

New Internet applications continue to arrive: buying stamps online, FAXing online, integrated FAX/paging/voicemail online, voicemail via email, email speech readers, vcard (standardized business card protocol)/vcalendar (online/shared calendars), online backup of PC-resident files, free email and community hosting, and much more. It's hard to keep track of these applications or to distinguish among the free and fee services that offer them. And it takes a reliable crystal ball to predict which applications and vendors will survive or matter. This presentation will survey the rapidly evolving Internet application arena, identify related technical trends, and suggest areas worth watching to increase personal and business productivity. The speaker is Peter Bostrom, Morino Institute Chief Technology Officer.
-----
No reservations are required to attend meetings. The Internet SIG's Web page at <http://www.cpcug.org/user/internet> provides full meeting information including driving directions, and news of other local Internet events and resources. It also describes how to subscribe to the Internet SIG's low-volume announcements-only mailing list to receive timely information about the local Internet community.

Seminar Description--Brief:
This seminar is for those who are ready to buy or to build a PC, or who just want to learn the latest on BIOS (basic input/output system), CPU (central processing unit), memory, and much more! Build Handbook available:  $10.00

Seminar Description--Detailed:
Thinking about a new computer? Do you know how much memory you need? What size hard drive?  EIDE or SCSI? What is a "good" monitor? Do you need a tape drive? What speed modem should you buy? Whether it's your first computer or a replacement for an older machine, this seminar has useful information for you.

The CPCUG Build Team updates this seminar three times a year, and you will learn the latest news on BIOS (basic input/output system), CPU (central processing unit), memory, monitors, motherboards, and much more!

The seminar includes extensive discussion about pricing and vendor issues. Two vendors will be present to answer questions.

This seminar will help you understand what you're buying. For example, a common monitor specification is "0.28 dot pitch." Well, what exactly is dot pitch, anyway? At this seminar you'll learn that dot pitch is a measure of the resolution, or image sharpness, that a monitor can display, and that 0.28 is the minimum you should accept on a 15-inch monitor. Anything less than that and the image will be fuzzy, leading to fatigue and eyestrain.

Prerequisite:
No hardware experience required

NOTE: You must attend this seminar to register for the next "Build Your Own PC" Workshop because you will be assigned your mentor at this seminar.

Build Handbook available:
$10.00

Area User Group Proves Its Commitment To Stopping the "Digital Divide"

On Thursday, January 21st, the Capital PC User Group, Inc. (CPCUG), will host a tribute to seven technology businesses (ATI Technologies, Casady & Greene, Inc., Corel Corporation, Microsoft Corporation, Qualitative Marketing, Inc., Philips Speech Processing, and SAIC/General Sciences Corporation) and two institutes (Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Institute and the Morino Institute) at its first annual awards reception headed by U.S. Representative Connie Morella at Rockville's Lone Oak Center (12:30 to 2:30 p.m.). The purpose of this event is to honor organizations that have demonstrated a steadfast commitment to "Bridging the Technology Gap" in the Washington Metropolitan Area by providing computer hardware and software that benefits all people regardless of age, race, abilities, ethnic, social, and economic background. "We are excited about our partnership with CHI Centers, Inc., a not-for-profit agency which has over a half a century of experience supporting children and adults with developmental disabilities. That organization made this location available for our use in
exchange for training support, which allows CPCUG to expand its education focus," said Lillian Milliner, President of CPCUG. "We are committed to stopping the 'Digital Divide' in Washington. We are bridging the gap between those that have and those that have not. These companies have committed resources to do just that!"

This Grand Opening commemorates the establishment of the first Partners in Technology (PIT) Center. It is the creation of the Capital PC User Group, Inc. (CPCUG), and is but one of several that will open throughout the Washington metropolitan area. The goal is to extend these partnerships to make computer technology training widely available to all people. This site will serve the various training needs of the community. There will be classes focusing on computer technology for after-school programs, as well as classes assisting individuals with disabilities to transition into the workforce. Mainstream classes will continue, of course, but it is our new partnership with other nonprofit organizations and corporations that will allow CPCUG to leverage both human and financial resources. Ms. Milliner said, "We need to remember that everyone has something to bring to the technology table, but a good banquet always has variety. Thus, we are proudest of the different organizations and individuals that have contributed to our 'Partners in Technology' Program. If this program is to flourish we must respect the diversity our technology vendors can and do bring to the community. CPCUG is an independent, non-profit user group dedicated to educating computer users.

For more information on the reception or Partner in Technology Center, please contact Lillian Milliner at 301-258-2906 (h), 301-762-9372 (o).
