Press Release Archive, 1995 Fact Sheet
Name: Capital PC User Group, Inc Officers: Richard Schinnell, President Publication: MONITOR Meetings: Voice: 301 762-9372 The Capital PC User Group, Inc. (CPCUG), founded in 1982, is one of the oldest Personal Computer user groups in the country. It is also one of the largest, with over 5,000 members in the greater Washington, DC, area. We are a volunteer organization with a central theme of "Users Helping Users." CPCUG is recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational organization. More than 60 percent of our members make decisions and/or recommendations about the purchase of computer equipment, within their companies or government agencies. CPCUG sponsors a wide variety of monthly activities, both in our own facilities in Rockville, Maryland, and in borrowed facilities. Monthly general meetings at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) include presentations from vendors and other experts, weekend seminars, and comparative demonstrations of competing software. Many "special interest groups" or SIGs have monthly meetings at the Rockville facility, all free and open to the public. We offer many levels of training classes in our Rockville facility, and maintain a 13-line computer bulletin-board system (BBS) for members' use. We also publish a monthly magazine (the Monitor) with articles written by members, addressing the wide interests of Personal Computer users, and maintain a "Helpline" listing of volunteers who will provide advice or technical assistance to other members over the phone. CPCUG also coordinates efforts by members who would like to contribute their computer expertise to other charitable and non-profit organizations in the metro DC area. Our members assisted in setting up the computer systems for the National Bone Marrow registration project as well as other worthwhile charitable organizations. Monthly "general meetings" are in the Masur Auditorium, in building 10, at the Clinical Center on the National Institutes of Health campus in Bethesda, Maryland. To serve the needs of members distributed over a large geographic area, we also hold regional meetings with outside presenters each month in Springfield, VA, Reston, VA, and Baltimore, MD. For those who are more interested in a specific area of computers, i.e., communications, investing, database, spreadsheet, word processing, etc., CPCUG offers Special Interest Group meetings and specialized training sessions. These are also open to the general public although there is a fee for some classes. The focus of the BBS is providing users with a way to ask questions and receive help on virtually any computer-related topic, in keeping with CPCUG's "Users Helping Users" philosophy. It also provides a fast and efficient medium for providing up-to-date information of CPCUG activities, and serves as a forum for discussions about the group's activities and services.
